Commandant of the Transvaal: the life and career of General Sir Hugh Rowlands, VC, KCB
ISBN 1-872424-41-4
Commandant of the Transvaal is the biography of Hugh Rowlands of Llanrug, north Wales, who became the first Welshman to be awarded the Victoria Cross for the gallantry which he displayed during the battle of Inkerman on 5 November 1854 (and possibly the first man to be nominated for a second Victoria Cross). He later served in South Africa where he led operations against the Pedi, the Zulu and the Boers. The author has attempted to disentangle the complex details of the operations in the Transvaal in 1878–9 and throws new light on the political manipulations carried out by some of the senior officers and, in doing so, provides new evidence on some of the disasters that overcame the British and colonial forces.
